What is PCOS?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age.
Depending on the initial testing, a fertility specialist may recommend a patient to start ovulation induction medications which stimulate the development of an ovarian follicle containing an egg with timed intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI) that can be scheduled around the time of ovulation.
- Hormonal birth control pills- Estrogen and progestin-containing pills reduce androgen production while also regulating oestrogen. Hormone regulation can reduce one’s chance of endometrial cancer, as well as abnormal bleeding, excessive hair growth, and acne. One may use a skin patch or vaginal ring that includes a mix of oestrogen and progestin instead of tablets.
- Maintaining a healthy weight- Weight loss can help restore ovulation by lowering insulin and testosterone levels. One should consult their doctor about a weight-loss programme, and visit with a dietician on a regular basis for assistance in achieving your weight-loss objectives.
- Laparoscopy surgery- Laparoscopic ovarian drilling is a surgical procedure that can help women with PCOS. Parts of the ovaries are destroyed using electrocautery or a laser. This procedure is hardly usually performed. However, it may be a possibility for women who have lost weight and tried fertility medications but are still not ovulating.
In terms of fertility treatment arising from PCOS one may opt for IVF or IUI-
IUI- Infertility treatment with IUI is one of the most popular options around the world. It is both safe and efficient. IUI stands for intrauterine insemination and this treatment includes injection of the sperm into a woman’s uterus when she is ovulating.
IVF- IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization and is a type of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). It involves the use of a combination of medications and surgical techniques to allow sperm to fertilise an egg outside of the body in a laboratory. An embryo is a fertilised egg that is transferred into a woman's uterus.
