The T-shaped uterine cavity is a condition in which the cavity width is less, and the side walls are quite thick. As a result, the uterus appears as a long, narrow cavity that resembles the letter T on imaging. The presence of a T-shaped uterus does not always imply that a woman is unable to conceive and carry a baby. The influence of the T-shaped uterus depends on the degree of abnormality, the woman's reproductive history, age, and other factors. Let’s understand it in detail.
A T-shaped uterus refers to a type of uterine dysmorphism in which the uterus is abnormally narrow because of thickened walls. It is different from a bicornuate uterus, as there is no abnormality noticeable on external contour; the abnormality is seen within the cavity only. According to the ESHRE/ESGE classification, the U1a type of T-shaped uterus is characterised by a narrow cavity due to lateral wall thickening. Generally, a T-shaped uterus is studied as a part of congenital uterine anomalies. However, T-shaped malformation may also result from certain acquired conditions. Pregnancy can certainly occur in individuals with a T-shaped uterus since this type of uterus simply does not impede ovulation, fertilisation, embryo growth, and implantation.
