Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) that is primarily used in cases of male infertility, unexplained infertility, and cervical hostility. Intrauterine means “inside the uterus” thus, intrauterine insemination is the process wherein the best quality sperms are introduced into the uterus to fertilise the egg. The objective here is to bring the sperms as close to the egg as possible.
IUI can be performed in two ways – self cycle and donor cycle. In self cycle, both the eggs and sperms are from the female and male partners, respectively. Since this procedure is performed when the female is in the reproductive age and produces good quality eggs, a donor cycle would require only a donor sperm sample for the procedure. After the introduction of the partner’s or donor’s inseminate, as the case may be, into the uterus, a beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (βhCG) test is performed two weeks later to ascertain that fertilisation and then implantation has taken place.
