Scientists saw a glimmer of hope in the mid-1800s when they discovered the process of artificial fertilization using sperm and eggs. Many experiments were performed through the 19th century. Dr. Jones and Dr. Edwards fertilized the first human egg in vitro in 1965 in an attempt to produce the world’s first IVF baby.

But the very first baby to be born with IVF technology was Louise Joy Brown, born on 25th July 1978 in England. It took 102 IVF cycles to achieve this huge milestone.

You will be surprised to know that the 2nd IVF baby of the world was actually India’s first IVF child. Her name is Durga or Kanupriya Agarwal and was born on 3rd October 1978.

From taboo to mainstream, advanced IVF techniques slowly became a household term. As per the AIIMS, almost one in seven people in India exhibit fertility complications. Today people are aware that both partners play an equally important part in fertility treatments. They know that lifestyle choices, nutritional intake, and the environment have a role to play beyond one’s genetic imposition.

How advanced IVF Techniques Developed.

Scientists worldwide started dabbling with artificial insemination as early as the 1850s. but they didn’t take into account ovulation cycles and didn’t consider male infertility. It took them decades to understand the correct IVF treatment.

Egg donation saw a spike in the 1980s with the first successful egg donation pregnancy in 1983

Cryopreservation or freezing of sperm, eggs and embryos saw a surge between the 1950s to 1990s.

IVF initially began with single embryo transfers. But in late 1990s, we saw experts transferring a blastocyst which is a little more developed than a 2-3 day old embryo.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection grew in popularity in the 1990s as it helped experts overcome male factor infertility.

1990s also saw the pre-implantation genetic screening and diagnosis grow as it could help the fertility experts eliminate genetic disorders.

Assisted hatching that helps an embryo implant successfully and time-lapse photos or embryoscope helped experts pick the embryos at the right time.

At Indira IVF, we are in sync with the advanced IVF techniques and choose the line of treatment that is most suited to a couple. Call 18003092323 for more details.
