PCOD Symptoms:

Complications of PCOD

  • Infertility: Due to PCOD, a woman can not ovulate regularly, this irregular ovulation prevents the production of eggs fro the fertilization process. If left untreated, it leads to severe problems in conceiving and in many cases ends with infertility in women.
  • Sleep Apnoea: Obesity is one of the common symptoms of PCOD. Obesity may cause repeated pauses in breathing while sleeping and this interrupts the sleep, this condition is called sleep apnoea.
  • Anxiety and depression: Due to hormonal changes and unwanted hair growth, anxiety or depression hit harder for the woman suffering from PCOD.
  • Endometriosis: This is another by-product of Polycystic Ovaries. Irregular ovulation thickens the lining in the uterus, that increases the risk of Endometriosis or Econometric cancer.
  • Heart-related disease: High insulin level increases the risk of high blood pressure, triglycerides, and atherosclerosis, etc. These conditions rise up the risk of heart attack or stroke.
  • Diabetes: Another metabolism complication occurred due to PCOD in Type 2 diabetes.

Treatment of PCOD:

PCOD treatment cost is not as high as we all think. We all already know PCOD symptoms vary from woman to woman and so the treatment differs. But one is commonly suggested by physicians to all PCOD sufferers is that they need a combination of medication and lifestyle changes to overcome with PCOD.

Modifying the lifestyle may include upgrading her diet, habits and physical exercise. These lifestyle changes are natural and PCOD treatment suggested to the patient while counseling from the doctor that can help her with PCOD conceive as well as avoid further complications in the future.

Some of the lifestyle adaptions that any PCOD patient must take note or do are:

  • Exercising regularly: Exercise is must be added as a part of your daily activities. Physical exercise not only boosts fertility but also eliminates toxins from the body.
  • Stress management: Stress is hard to ignore in our day-to-day life but one should always know the right way to deal with it. In women, stress is a major reason for hormonal changes causing PCOD. Hence, women suffering from PCOD are recommended to relax and tame their stress.
  • Healthy Diet: To correct the insulin level, women require to upgrade her diet into a healthy diet including fibers, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Quite bad habits: All the bad habits including consumption of Alcohol, drugs, and smoking, needed to be quite to avoid PCOD as well as infertility.

Medical treatment for PCOD:

Various treatments are available for the PCOD treatment and the treatment, as well as the treatment cost, depends upon the severity of the condition and its clinical presentation.

  • Oral Contraceptive: The first intention of the treatment is to regulate your periods, hence contraceptive agents are prescribed. These agents effectively decrease the luteinizing hormone levels, which leads to regular menstrual cycles. Oral contraceptives also help in reducing acne and hirsutism caused by PCOD.
  • Fertility Agents: If you are trying to conceive fertility agents are given to you instead of contraceptives. Clomiphene is the general medicine prescribed for this treatment. In some cases, letrozole (Femara) is also recommended.
  • Surgical options: Laparoscopy is the most recommended surgical option for PCOD treatment. In this, the ovarian cysts are removed. Other options are ovarian drilling and cyst aspiration etc.

PCOD and pregnancy:

You can cure PCOD completely, but you can heal it to conceive a baby. After successful modification in your lifestyle and medication, if you are not able to conceive naturally, IVF is the most recommended method to get pregnant. There are few complications related to PCOD during pregnancy, such as:

  • Miscarriage
  • Gestation diabetes
  • Premature birth

Fortunately, with proper guidance, medications and IVF treatment the majority of women with PCOD successfully got pregnant.
