Artificial Intelligence-Embryo Selection Process

One of the most critical steps in In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is the selection of the embryos to be implanted. It is the method of reviewing the health of fertilised embryos and choosing the finest & healthiest embryos for transfer. What is Artificial Intelligence-Embryo Selection Procedure?

The Artificial Intelligence embryo selection procedure is a computerised process that evaluates embryos to determine which one is most likely to survive and be transferred. While using deep machine learning to tens of thousands of embryo pictures from across the globe with documented outcomes, it can recognise complex morphological characteristics and patterns that are invisible to the human eye. It evaluates patient embryos' photos to determine their quality, assisting the embryologist in choosing the embryo that has the best chance of succeeding.

AI-based embryo selection reduces the number of cycles required for a successful pregnancy through enhanced embryo selection and improved pregnancy forecasting in IVF.

There are the following steps involved in Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced Embryo Selection Procedure:

  • The AI programme will be updated with microscopic photos of each blastocyst.
  • According to each blastocyst's capability for implantation and chance of conceiving a child, an exact score (called an "AI Score") will be created in a matter of minutes.
  • The blastocyst with the best ratings will be considered for transfer into the mother's womb.


How is the AI-Embryo Selection Procedure different from the Current IVF Process?

During ovulation, sperm is directly inserted by professionals into the uterine cavity, or they are extracted to fertilise the egg in controlled lab conditions. The embryo is being assessed with AI, and only the optimum embryo with the highest likelihood of successful pregnancy is implanted. Each patient who utilises an AI-based embryo selection process, will also receive a report of the AI results on their embryos as a memory as well as to offer more transparency and trust to their IVF process.

In contrast, in current IVF procedures, the Embryo assessment is done manually as per embryo scope scoring standard, which is inferior to what AI can do.
