Electronic Witnessing System is a modern day application in IVF practice. It uses radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for tracking and recording patient’s information and the samples during the complete IVF process.
In this technology, every sample is labelled with an RFID chip. This chip identifies the sample of husband and wife or the donor, as the case may be, apart from monitoring every step of the process, and record information regarding the progress in ART cycle. An embryologist can only perform the procedure if the two samples in the vicinity are of the same case, that is, of the husband and wife or related donor. In case samples of a different couple are brought even in 1 or 1½ foot vicinity, the procedure is completely halted as the alarms set off, all screens turn red, and would require an intervention of someone senior to unlock the system.
Sample identification as well as tracking of all the procedures are required for patient safety and quality health care. Responsibility lies in avoiding such mistakes, risks and their consequences by implementing this system that minimises the possibility of embryo mix-up.
