PCOD diagnosis is carried out with the help of blood tests and a sonography. These tests help the doctor understand your total blood count, blood sugar levels, hormonal levels, and condition of the ovaries.
As mentioned earlier, there is no permanent cure for PCOD as of today. PCOD treatment majorly involves a combination of medications and lifestyle changes that need to be made by the patient. These changes include:
Medications
The doctor may prescribe birth control pills to help regularise periods. Some patients may not be able to take birth control pills due to contraindications. These patients may be given metformin to regularise periods and manage other symptoms of PCOD.
Women may also be given hormonal medication too, though this will depend on the results of the PCOD test. Women who are trying to conceive will be put on medication that enhances ovulation.
Lifestyle changes
PCOD needs to be managed through certain lifestyle changes in order to control symptoms, such as irregular periods. Women who have been diagnosed with PCOD need to be very particular about eating healthy and exercising regularly.
If you have been diagnosed with PCOD, you need to lower your intake of simple carbohydrates, such as foods high in sugar. Consuming such foods can cause your blood sugar levels to rise and worsen the underlying insulin resistance which, in turn, can trigger your PCOD. Instead, increase your intake of foods high in fibre, such as sweet potato and broccoli. Try to consume foods that help battle inflammation such as berries, fatty fish, and turmeric (haldi). If you eat non-vegetarian foods, switch from red meat to lean meats, such as chicken.
Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily by practicing any exercise form that you like. Good options to start with include walking, jogging, swimming, dancing, or even yoga. Stress can also trigger PCOD symptoms, so try to meditate or relax as much as possible.
