Synopsis

IVF children are as normal as other children as far as their physical attributes and mental capacity are concerned. And also they are as naturally born as other children.

Since IVF is a rarefied subject, many people are still skeptical about it and harbor a lot of preconceived notions. One common prejudice which is prevalent even among the educated class is that IVF babies are not completely ‘normal’ as they are a product of the technical expertise of doctors. Some even argue that IVF babies are artificial since they are designed in cutting-edge laboratories. The premise of their argument is that IVF babies are not offshoots of a natural process that is sexual intercourse between couples. And since technical expertise and surgical machinations are deployed, they feel that IVF babies cannot be as normal as the ones who are born naturally.

This fallacy has been endlessly and fervently perpetuated by a conservative and ignorant section of people. But the truth is far from it. IVF children is as normal as other children as far as their physical attributes and mental capacity are concerned. And also they are naturally born like other children. All one needs is to do their share of research and consult an insightful and perceptive doctor to dispel such rampant myths.

While it is true that in IVF, the doctor inserts the embryo into the uterus of women through the cervix, the process of women getting pregnant hereafter is as normal as it happens in the case of sexual intercourse between partners. One must understand that the ART technology that is used during the IVF treatment stands for Assisted Reproductive Technology, and not Artificial Reproductive Technology.

The only difference between IVF and the normal processes is that in the case of IVF, sperms, and eggs are fertilized in the lab under the supervision of seasoned doctors. The fusion takes place in the test tube instead of the Fallopian tube. Couples opt for IVF because either the male partner is unable to produce sperms or high-quality sperm, or the female partner is unable to produce eggs or high-quality eggs or there is a blockage in Fallopian tubes. Their sexual intercourse does not produce an embryo hence female partner can’t get pregnant. The fertilization and fusion of eggs in the lab is an alternative to sexual intercourse.

Once the embryo is produced by the fusion of sperm and eggs in the lab, it is transferred into the uterus of the woman. And after that, the whole process is totally the same as any usual case. After the embryo is transferred into the uterus, the woman gets pregnant and gives birth to a child after the stipulated time.

IVF babies are as normal as other children. In fact, until one is told, it is impossible to distinguish between IVF babies and other children.
