Synopsis

male infertility, female infertility, ivf, iui, icsi, test tube baby, azoospermia, infertile couples, pregnancy, parenthood

The present scenario totally contradicts the social taboo that deems a woman to be solely responsible for infertility. The fact is that all the fertility centres on day to day basis come across couples who are in search of sperm donors. Women require donated sperm when their partner produce very little or no sperm. This condition is called azoospermia. Also, in many cases the male partner is found to have some genetic disease and because the couple doesn’t want their offspring to inherit the same, they opt for donated sperm. It’s also the only option towards attaining parenthood for men who’ve had irreversible vasectomy and for same sex couples. For couples facing any of the circumstances mentioned above, sperm donation is a boon and thankfully there are generous men who can empathise with the ones who can’t have the joy of parenthood naturally and hence as a help they offer their sperms. However, using donated sperms is a crucial decision, not just on the emotional part but on the medical part as well. However, taking help from a renowned and a credible sperm bank is a safe option.

The donated sperm is used to fertilize the egg inside or outside the woman’s body. When it’s as intrauterine insemination, the sperms are injected directly into the woman’s uterus, so that they do not have to go too far to reach the eggs. This boosts the chances of fertilization. And in the case of IVF, the sperms are used to fertilize the eggs in a laboratory, in vitro.

Donated sperm may be used for both kind of treatments, insemination through intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization. Usually, the men are made to undergo various tests to ensure that the donor does not have any of the genetic and sexually transmitted diseases. The sperm recipient also goes through similar tests. She is also made to undergo a tubal patency test to ensure that there is no blockage in the tube. After the eggs of the female are retrieved for the IVF, they are fertilized with the washed and treated donor sperms. In case the person has opted for an IUI, the donor sperms are placed near the cervix or inside the uterus using a thin catheter for in utero fertilization.

The success rates vary from treatment to treatment and body to body. The highest chances of success are with IVF in which women younger than 35 years of age may have up to 50% chance at success.
