Let’s know how the process of IVF is carried out at Indira IVF Whitefield centre

IVF treatment consists of 6 stages: Ovarian stimulation, Egg retrieval, In vitro fertilization, Embryo transfer, Embryo freezing (optional) and the Pregnancy test.

Stage 1: Ovarian Stimulation
In the first step, your natural menstrual cycle is replaced by a medically controlled stimulation. Therefore, you are given medication at the start of the treatment. With hormonal injections, we stimulate the ovaries to allow different eggs to mature in the ovaries. The stimulation is followed up with blood draws and ultrasounds, stated Dr. Mekhala Iyengar (Centre Head,Indira IVF clinic in Whitefield) .

There are different stimulation protocols: the fertility doctor will propose a scheme taking into account the diagnosis, your age and previous treatments (if any). The stimulation is monitored with an ultrasound of the follicles and blood analyzes (for hormonal values).

Stage 2: Ovum pick-up and sperm sample collection-
After about 10 days, the egg follicles are mature enough (with hormonal injections) to be harvested. The eggs are collected with a fine, hollow needle through a vaginal puncture under ultrasound. This is done under local anesthesia and takes about 15 to 30 minutes, stated, Dr. Mekhala Iyengar (Centre Head, Indira IVF,IVF clinic in Whitefield) .

Sperm sample collection-

Sperm sample is also taken on the same day as that of egg retrieval.

Phase 3: In Vitro fertilization-
After selection, the most motile sperm are placed in a dish with the egg. The dish is then placed in an incubator to allow fertilization and embryo division. 18 to 24 hours later, the lab examines whether and how many eggs have been fertilized, said Dr. Mekhala Iyengar (Centre Head, Indira IVF, IVF treatment in Whitefield) .

The fertilized eggs (zygotes) are put back into the incubator to let them divide further. The growth process and quality are closely monitored. Based on this data, the best embryos are selected for transfer to the uterus.

* With ICSI , the egg is directly injected with a sperm cell in the dish.

Phase 4: Embryo transfer-
The transfer is done with a fine catheter that is introduced through the cervix into the uterine cavity. There, the embryo is left in a small drop of liquid under ultrasound control.

It is best to come with a full bladder. The number of embryos that will be placed depends on your age and the number of attempts. The aim is to maximize the chances of pregnancy while limiting the risk of a multiple pregnancy, confirmed Dr. Mekhala Iyengar (Centre Head, Indira IVF clinic in Whitefield) .

Stage 5: Freezing Embryos (Cryopreservation)
If top quality embryos remain after the embryo transfer, they can be kept frozen (cryopreservation). For a new IVF attempt, the frozen eggs must be thawed first, shared Dr. Mekhala Iyengar (Centre Head, Indira IVF Test tube baby centre in Whitefield) .

Stage 6: Pregnancy Test
The pregnancy test can be taken two weeks after the embryo transfer. If you are pregnant, we will perform the first ultrasound at 7 weeks. Afterwards, you can return to your gynaecologist.

If you are not pregnant, a new attempt will be made or the frozen embryos will be thawed and transferred first. If there are no frozen embryos, a new cycle is scheduled. After the first attempt, it is best to make an appointment with your attending physician, explained Dr. Mekhala Iyengar (Centre Head, Indira IVF,IVF cost in Whitefield).
