Home > Test Tube Baby and Its Process

There are multiple reasons for infertility in both men and women. At Indira IVF, we examine both partners thoroughly before we suggest IVF or test tube baby.

Some of the common reasons to go to a test tube baby centre are

  1. Blocked fallopian tubes
  2. Polycystic ovary (PCOS)
  3. Severe endometriosis
  4. Progressing maternal age
  5. Male infertility
  6. Diminished ovarian reserve
  7. Endometrial polyps
  8. Unknown factors

What is a test tube baby?

Test tube baby means a child that is conceived outside a woman’s body. The baby is conceived in a lab through a scientific process of mixing eggs and sperm in a petri-dish. Once the embryo is formed, it is planted into the woman’s body and the pregnancy continues like all other normal pregnancies.

Step-by-Step Test Tube Baby Process

1. Egg production

The woman is injected with hormones like gonadotrophins and GnRH antagonist to promote synchronous growth and maturation of the follicles inside her ovaries. This is followed by injecting HCG or GnRH agonist as trigger 36 hours before egg collection to ensure the eggs are in a mature stage.

2. Retrieving eggs from the ovary

Eggs are retrieved with the help of an ultrasound vaginal probe with a fine hollow needle attached to them. These eggs are immediately taken to the lab. The woman is given a mild sedative so she doesn’t feel any discomfort during this process.

3. Collecting sperm sample

The man is required to produce a fresh semen sample on the same day as the woman’s egg retrieval or we can use the frozen semen sample.

4. Fertilizing the egg and sperm

The eggs and sperms are mixed in a petri-dish and then placed inside an incubator for a few days. Nowadays intracytoplasmic sperm injection is done that is known as ICSI. This is monitored by a fertility specialist for signs of fertilization and growth of the embryos.

5. Introducing fertilized eggs into the uterus

One or Two embryos are transferred into the uterus of the woman with a fine catheter. To increase the possibility of implantation, we administer the woman with progesterone daily and HCG also.
